This play is a faithful adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s powerful drama that takes place in Puritan Boston. Adulteress Hester Prynne must wear a scarlet “A” to mark her shame and secrecy, as she refuses to identify the father of her daughter, Pearl. When Roger Chillingworth, her husband who all thought was lost at sea, arrives in Boston, he reveals his identity to no one but Heather as he seeks revenge on whoever compromised her reputation. Meanwhile, the young, eloquent minister Arthur Dimmesdale is suffering from severely declining health, apparently brought on by great psychological distress. Chillingworth becomes Dimmesdale physician and eventually moves in with him in order to provide round-the-clock medical attention.see less
